Sometimes I blush because people think I’m in my late 20s. Actually, I turned 41 this year!
And I don’t use any weird technique to make myself look younger.
Good, healthy food and daily exercise.
But here is the thing: I was NOT a fitness nerd AT ALL.
Three years ago, I was fat, sick, and nearly dead
I was a wreck of a human being.
I found myself vegging out inside dark clouds of overthinking, sadness, fears and tears.
As a side effect of this black emotional state, the only part of my body that moved was my left hand opening the fridge. A thousand times a day to grab everything yummy. And unfortunately, almost every food that’s yummy is crap. Foods that make you fatigued, tired, and may even convert you into a big, fat sack of potatoes.
Psychologists call this kind of overeating “filling the emptiness”. And it worked awesome for me.
Not that it was a proper therapy. But it worked awesome in terms of making me no longer fit into my pants. In the middle of the crisis, I had around 130 kg on my hips and ribs.
That’s not being overweight. That’s being fat and flabby.
And it didn’t only affect my day-to-day life.
My nights were terrifying, too. My heart did somersaults during sleep. I had apnoea, where I stopped breathing a couple of times for up to 20 seconds. Actually, I didn’t get any good sleep for months, which made my days quite challenging as I had to fight with sheer exhaustion.
When I started to worry a bit about all of this, I went to the doctor to get a complete check-up.
The result: “Sven, you have to lose weight. You are about to have serious diabetes.”
Of course, getting diagnosed with diabetes isn’t only about food. Your emotional state is also involved. Your mental and emotional state are strongly connected.
Anyway, I was aware that my horrible nights with apnoea and the heart thing were quite dangerous. But the tougher problem was that I didn’t fit into my pants anymore. I felt a bit like head cheese in my clothes.
Something screamed inside my coconut that I could not go on like this
First, because actually I still loved living on this planet. Second, I became conscious that my little son needed a healthy daddy – both mentally and physically.
And there came the point where I started moving my fat bottom. I started by walking every day in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. During the early days I thought I would collapse after only walking 3 to 4 kilometers, and I had a hard time getting back to my car. Two weeks later I bought a mountain bike and started riding every single day. Every day, I tried to go a few meters farther until I reached my goal of 30 km daily mountain biking. I lost quite a lot of fat and my brain started to release anti-stress hormones.
Mentally, I felt much better. I noticed that I was dealing with some of the issues in my life much better than I had during my time of mental darkness.
Now, as I lost a lot of weight in a short time, you can imagine that my skin wasn’t prepared for this rapid progress. And although the scale showed 10 kg less than half a year ago, I realized that I needed to do extra exercises. You know, to shape my body and help it to recover from being a former walrus.
Option one would be joining a fitness studio. I hated this idea. I tried it once and I felt quite weird doing workouts surrounded by pumped-up athletes.
So I started to research online. The Internet is full of online programs, and I invested some decent bucks in trying some. The positive side of training online was that I trained comfortably at home alone, at my own pace. And without getting strange looks from the fitness studio Schwarzeneggers.

I loved riding the mountain bike along the shore, and in no way did I want to stop that. But I also could not invest two or three hours a day into keeping my body fit.
